Subject: RESULTS: rs_public and rs_special to serve as public RSICC Newsletters
Results Summary: motion carries with no dissenting votes.
Regarding:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rs_public/messages/
and
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rs_special/messages/
to become subscribable newsletters
VOTE INTRO COMMENTS:
Proposed: have rs_public and rs_special YahooGroups be something anyone could subscribe to if they
wanted.
This way, those who are interested in our goings on could receive our dialogue right in their inbox.
This would be ideal for individuals interested in RSICC but who are not quite ready to jump in as
members.
Because the lists are moderated, generally only RSICC members would be able to post to the group,
though in the case of rs_public I could envision instances where a relevant message from someone
else who is watching on could be allowed to go to the list as well.
rs_special is designed to archive messages sent to rs_public for those who are subscribed to
rs_public with the "special notices only" option. It's volume is quite a bit lower than
rs_public, and would be a more likely choice for the interested observer. It would also be ideal for
the potential honorary member to get a taste of the group before accepting the nomination.
We will need guild approval for this step, though really it isn't a change from the current set-up
which enables the public to view the archive of either of these lists online.
The rs_newsletter list (to which anyone can subscribe at present) can still serve its purpose of
providing an occasional (e.g. monthly or bi-weekly) overview of guild developments.
Technically, the above proposal could accomplished in at least two ways.
(1) by converting rs_public and rs_special into newsletters, and making RSICC members have
'moderator' status so they could have posting privileges. YahooGroups enables a wide range of
variables within the 'moderator' status, so making someone a 'moderator" does not necessarily
mean they are given the ability to approve of disapprove of messages that go to the list. That
function will be reserved to facilitators.
(2) by leaving the list with its current settings and relying on the facilitators to recognize who
is a member and who is not when approving or declining messages.
The main advantage of the first method is that it is a way to distinguish who is a member or
approved nominee of RSICC and who is not. It would also maintain the current ability for guild
members to view the members of the list. The advantage of the second method is that when
non-members' posts were approved to go to the list, the message would show as coming from them,
whereas in the former case, the facilitators would have to forward the message to the list, and the
message would show as coming from the facilitator (though in the preface to the message itself, the
facilitator would make it clear that the message was coming from a separate individual). I prefer
the first method.
