EXPLANATION:
[March 21 ~4:00 pm MST]

I just submitted the following classified ad to be run in Brigham Young University's newspaper, The Daily Universe, beginning Monday, March 25, 2002. The deadline for changes prior to publication is March 22, 2:00 pm.
http://newsnet.byu.edu/classifieds/

The ad:

ACTIVISM -- Fundraising for Remnant Saints Inter-Continental Congress (rsicc.org). FT/PT flex. up to $12/hr or more. No car needed. Career opportunities. 435-283-6340, rep@rsicc.org

The five-line ad will run for 10 days at a cost of $67.37 It will be renewed contingent on its level of success on the first run. If this proves to be successful, we can extend the campaign to other newspapers and centers of population, beginning with conservative regions.

The job will entail canvassing door to door to solicit funds for Remnant Saints Inter-Continental Congress. The individual will be paid proportional to how much they collect, though not by a direct percentage, but rather by a graduated scale. If very few funds are collected, they will keep a larger percentage to ensure a minimal compensation for their time spent. If larger sums are collected, they will receive a smaller percentage, to keep overhead down.

A new index has been created for further descriptions of this employment position and others that may arise.
http://www.rsicc.org/jobs/

My reason for testing this approach with The Daily Universe is (1) proximity [1.5 hours north], (2) ideal target audience for the ad [conservative, principled University, ambitious college youth], (3) ideal location for fundraising [conservative, somewhat wealthy population], (4) as an ideal 'wake-up' opportunity both for the ad audience as well as for the canvassing area.

The pay scale is based on a comparable canvassing effort taking place by the Sierra Club in Salt Lake City. They ask for $75.00 at the door, and collect anywhere from 3 to 9 times in an hour.

The reason for the "no car needed" statement is because the phone number prefix is outside of Utah County, where BYU students reside. This tells them that the job can be accomplished locally.

Supplemental materials will be prepared for the canvassing effort, based mainly on material at the RSICC website. Anything significantly outside of that will be presented to RSICC for a vote of approval. For now, we will have a one-page flier to be distributed to all recipients during canvassing. There will also be a packet for the person doing the canvassing, which will include suggested introductory statements and a FAQ page. Eventually, we could also include a 'Remnant Saints membership packet' or an 'International Patriot Alliance membership packet.' These may take some time to develop before they are ready for disbursal. Contributing individuals can be given an option of receiving a free subscription to the RSICC Newsletter.

No copies will be ran until we know how many we need, based on individuals who respond to the ad and agree to do the work.

I realize that we yet need to decide on a legal structure for the organization and that we need to get an official bank account; but we are set up temporarily through my GreaterThings bank account, which also includes a DBA for RSICC. I will say that I plan to reconfigure my Greater Things account some time soon as well.

Another aspect that will need to be put in place soon, if this is successful to any degree, is that we will need to be able to compensate these "employees" and have our paper work in order in a way that satisfies the current government. For now, starting out, there are income minimums ($600?) that can be disbursed without requirements for filing. As for amounts surpassing those minimums, one way we could get around this while we are not yet prepared to have such paper work in proper order, is that those who collect funds could do so under their own volition and interest in our project. Our compensation of their time would not be on a contractual basis (which would require state-approved paperwork), but on a voluntary basis as well. It would be a mutually trusting relationship.

Perhaps I am acting in haste to move forward on this without first having everything in place. I am impulsive by nature. I'm hoping, though, that getting this heat under our saddle can help get us moving. Sometimes its good to make sure everything is in place before moving ahead. Sometimes waiting can terminate something good by killing its momentum. Again, we look at courtship for examples of both extremes.

One of my reasons for wanting to try this now is that I am curious to see (1) how many would respond to the ad; (2) of those, how many would actually pursue it; and (3) what kind of success we could have in raising funds and awareness through this avenue. In the case that we receive no serious inquiries within the first three or four days, we will pull the ad and receive a refund for the remaining amount.

It's definitely one of those "Read, Fire, Aim" moments.

If you think I'm wrong to take this step now, you have an opportunity to cast your vote and effect a change of course. The deadline for pulling the ad is March 22 2:00 pm MST. Of course, if enough of you weigh in against this after that deadline, we can pull the ad prematurely from its full ten-day run and only be charged for a one or two-day rate.
